Aberdeen Pitches Kayak/Canoe Launch Near Wal-Mart

Aberdeen, WA - The City of Aberdeen yesterday asked the Port of Grays Harbor for a familiar piece of waterfront property back. Community Development Director Lisa Scott said with the expansion of Wal-Mart at the Olympic Gateway Plaza, and the additional parking expected near the Compass Rose "We figured this is a great opportunity in allowing public access to a facility that the ports had since 1965 when the Port of Grays Harbor purchased that property from the City of Aberdeen."
Scott, and Aberdeen Mayor Bill Simpson told Commissioners that the property would make an excellent bookend to Morrison Riverfront Park, and that the city has already been working on ideas "One of the things that came back was a canoe/kayak launch. What's there by compass rose now where the Lady Washington was launched, is a perfect spot where we could develop that."
The Port of Grays Harbor purchased the property, including the Wal-Mart location, from Aberdeen for $15,000. Port Commissioners yesterday took no action on the presentation, and thanked city officials for their time.
