WINLOCK, Wash. - Detectives from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested twenty-four year old Reginald L. Juntunen of Winlock for a 2007 east county rape case involving an eight year old female victim.
On September 22, 2007, deputies from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office were called to a campground in the 200 block of Ajlune Road outside of Mossyrock to a reported rape. The girl told the deputies she was riding her bike in the campground when she was approached by an adult male. He told her he wanted her to come look at something. When she came closer to him he told her he had a knife and forced her into a public bathroom. Once inside he threatened her with the knife and sexually assaulted her, he then fled on foot. Physical evidence was gathered at the scene by the deputies and submitted to the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab.
On July 2, 2012, detectives received notification from the crime lab they had identified a suspect through the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). That information led detectives to develop probable cause to arrest Mr. Juntunen. We had information Mr. Juntunen was to be at a court hearing in Lewis County Superior Court this morning at 9:30 on an unrelated matter. Detectives arrested him without incident. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail for Rape of a Child 1st degree, Rape 1st degree, Child Molestation 1st degree, Kidnapping 1st degree, Unlawful Imprisonment and Assault 2nd degree.
“This is an excellent example of the technology that exists today and how we are utilizing it to solve crimes, make arrests and send people to prison. Without the CODIS System this arrest would not have been possible,” said Sheriff Steve Mansfield.
