Coast Guard Tows Distressed Vessel near Illwaco

Illwaco, WA - The Coast Guard rescued four boaters from a 22-foot recreational vessel after their boat began taking on water, Tuesday, approximately one half mile north of the North Jetty at Cape Disappointment near Ilwaco.

A 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Cape Disappointment was conducting drills along the river bar when they overheard a radio call reporting the distressed vessel.

The crew of the motor lifeboat transferred three boaters onboard and began dewatering the vessel at approximately 11:30 a.m. Damage control efforts were unsuccessful; however, the pump was able to prevent any further flooding while the motor lifeboat crew towed the vessel into Ilwaco where it was removed from the water.

"Mariners should thoroughly inspect their vessels before heading to the ocean,” said Lt. Scott McGrew, Commanding Officer of Station Cape Disappointment. “Make sure you have lifejackets for everyone and things that expire are up to date like your flares. Check your vessel’s water tight integrity, check the weather, and check your radio. There are Coast Guard Auxiliarists on every ramp during Buoy 10. Take an extra few minutes and allow them to inspect your vessel."
