Double the MPG By 2025?

Olympia, WA - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are expected to put the final stamp of approval this summer on a plan to require better gas mileage for new cars and trucks. A new campaign is under way to show support for the new mileage standard - 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 - and to educate the public about what it all means.

That means that we save money at the pump, it means that we're creating jobs in the auto industry, and at the same time, we're reducing our dangerous dependence on oil and cutting harmful carbon pollution. - League of Conservation Voters Legislative Director Sara Chieffo

In fact, the total fuel savings over the lifetime of a new vehicle come to more than $8,000 for the average consumer, and that adds up to a nationwide savings of $444 billion over the life of vehicles with the higher standard.

Chieffo says you can think of it as cutting future gas bills in half.

"That translates into real savings for the average American consumer, and would effectively make our cars go twice as far on a gallon of gas."

She credits the EPA, DOT and the White House for providing real solutions for high prices at the pump, which are taking a bite out of family vacations this summer.

The campaign comes from the Save Our Environment Action Fund, a coalition of environmental organizations, and features an ad that can be seen at www.DoubleTheMPG.com.
