Hoquiam, WA - The City of Hoquiam this week took a stance of opposition and inquiry to the Wild Olympics Campaign, Councilman Darrin Moir said the resolution adopted sends a strong message. While we disagree with portions of the legislation, we also are here to open a dialog and keep that dialog open. This is a good resolution, it leaves the door wide open for dialog. - Hoquiam Councilman Darrin Moir Al Carter, who now works for the Wild Olympics campaign, spoke against each item on the resolution before it's adoption. "It won't close roads, it won't affect access, and it won't cost a single timber job. It will permanently protect our natural heritage for future generations." Councilwoman Brenda Carlstrom said she represented the residents that openly supported Wild Olympics when she was the only nay vote. After a very tame debate over the resolution, and it's adoption, Mayor Jack Durney praised all in attendance "I think it's something we can all be very proud of, tonight's meeting is something that I think is one of the greatest things I've witnessed in this room in nine years. Knowing a lot of the folks who are here have very oposite feelings about different things." The Hoquiam resolution did not directly cite legislation proposed last week by Norm Dicks and Patty Murray's office, rather it stated that the city opposed many of the ideals therein, and encouraged residents to remain involved in the discussion.
