Celebrate an Old Fashioned 4th at Westport

Head to Westport for their all-day 4th of July celebration, capped by fireworks at Firecracker Point at dusk. Watch for the huge (30'x50') American flag Museum visible 5 miles away to guide you to the Maritime Museum grounds, and a day full of day full of clowns, games, face painting, arts and craft vendors, a plant sale, silent auction, ongoing raffle prizes, and the famous cake walk.

Food choices will include bakery goods, hot dogs, gourmet sausages, root beer floats, and traditional strawberry shortcake with whipped cream. The gazebo stage will feature musicians and local talent performances. A children's game arcade and croquet tournament will run all day long at the former Coast Guard Lifeboat Station.

Patriotic ceremonies featuring presentation of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard Grays Harbor, the American Legion Auxiliary No. 140, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3057, and the national anthem by Westport musician Steve Markham on trumpet will start off the festivities which run from 11AM to 4PM.

The 4th will also mark the opening of a special exhibit commemorating the bicentennial of the "War of 1812." The Naval History and Heritage Command has provided six free-standing graphic panels telling the history of the U.S. sea services during the War of 1812, which for the US Navy runs from April 2012 through June 2015. The Destruction Island Lens Building will be open, providing visitors an opportunity to examine a first order Fresnel lens up close. The Maritime Museum is located in Westport's Marina District and is operated by the Westport-South Beach Historical Society. Museum admission will be $5 for adults and $2 for children under age 12. There is no charge for admission onto the grounds and access to the events.

When the Maritime Museum's Old Fashioned 4th is over at 4PM, visitors can enjoy a dinner in one of Westport's many restaurants or stroll on the waterfront, until dusk, when a spectacular 30-minute fireworks demonstration will kick off. The exhibition is co-sponsored by the City of Westport and Ocean Companies, which includes Ocean Cold and Ocean Gold of Westport and Ocean Protein of Hoquiam. The exhibition will beginning at approximately 10:30PM at Firecracker Point in Westport-where the fireworks will light up the skies.
