Four Officers Injured Breaking Up Assault at Washington State Penitentiary

Posted by David Haviland on February 7, 2012 at 4:56 am (319 social interactions)

Four correctional officers were injured while breaking up a fight Saturday night at the Washington State Penitentiary. All four correctional officers were treated and released from a local hospital.
The assault occurred at about 7:40 p.m. in the commons area of a unit in the West Complex, which is the prison’s second-highest custody level. Four correctional officers were injured as they broke up a fight between two offenders who had handmade sharpened weapons.
Both offenders were placed in a segregation unit where they will be interviewed by prison investigators and local law enforcement.
All four units of the West Complex, which houses high-risk offenders, are on lockdown.

Last week an assault in a different unit of the West Complex resulted in a lockdown of all four units. The other three units returned to normal operations Saturday but are now on lockdown again as staff and local law enforcement conduct investigations.
Washington State Penitentiary houses more than 2,000 offenders in minimum-, medium-, close- and maximum-custody units. It and Clallam Bay Corrections Center are the state’s two highest-security prisons.
