Posted by David Haviland on October 28, 2011 at 11:38 am (759 social interactions)

HonkHoquiam, WA - High School Cheerleaders in Hoquiam yesterday launched the first of a statewide campaign against distracted teenaged drivers. Jonna VanDyk with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission explained "They're kind of our test case on this, and they've just done a bang up job. Yesterday they were out holding a banner that said 'honk if you don't text and drive'."
Team Captain Bianca Murray said today, the group is talking with peers about the dangers of distracted driving "We made a huge commitment poster that says 'I commit to not texting or talking on the phone while driving' and we're going to have all the students sign it and when they sign it they get a pace of candy and a raffle ticket that you are entered in a drawing to win an ipod."
The team's educational efforts will land them a $500 State Farm grant administered by the Commission, VanDyk said Shelton Cheerleaders are also starting the program soon, we'll have more details and talk with Hoquiam's cheerleaders on Monday.
