Department of Ecology news release: Sunken Tugboat

Posted by David Haviland on April 18, 2009 at 10:10 pm (652 social interactions)

BOTHELL - A Washington Department of Ecology spills  response crew is monitoring the recovery of a tugboat that spilled diesel fuel into the water as it sunk on the northeast end of Lake Washington.

The tugboat, operated by Lakeshore Marine Construction, sunk about 1:40 p.m. today (April 18, 2009) but an Ecology spokesman said the "heavy sheen" of diesel created in the sinking has been contained by oil booms.

A contractor is raising the tugboat out of the water. It's not known at this time what caused the sinking.

"We will stay there until the tug is raised," said Ecology spokesman Dick Walker. It is not known how much diesel was spilled.

Lakeshore Marine Construction does waterfront construction such as retaining walls and docks.

More information on the raising of the tugboat and recovery of the diesel fuel will be released as it becomes available.
