Posted by David Haviland on June 9, 2011 at 6:56 pm (952 social interactions)

CoCoRaHS, (the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network), is seeking volunteers to provide rain and snowfall information which will be used to assist in calibration of the new Doppler radar in Grays Harbor County. Chuck Wallace, Deputy Director of the Grays Harbor County Emergency Management Agency tells us participation is FREE, VERY EASY and voluntary.

Grays Harbor County is pummeled by severe storms on a regular basis. The Doppler radar will be a tremendous tool for National Weather Service forecasters. In the past, all response agencies were essentially reactive to weather events as they occurred throughout the county. National Weather Service Forecasters had no reliable ability to predict storm time of arrival, duration, or intensity.

The new Doppler radar will be able to provide essential information for dependable, up to the minute forecasting of severe weather events. This information will allow response agencies to become pro-active in their approach to protect the citizens of their communities.

Currently, Grays Harbor County has very few CoCoRaHS volunteers. In fact, we are one of the least represented counties in Washington State. Your participation will assist in keeping the Doppler radar calibrated with real world information which will result in much more accurate and dependable forecasts for your community. Please take the time to read about the Doppler radar and consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.
