WDFW Seeks Public Comment on Razor Clam Season

Posted by David Haviland on September 10, 2010 at 5:43 am (722 social interactions)

Montesano, WA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is now accepting public comments on digging days, catch limits and other management options for the upcoming razor clam season.

Suggestions for the 2010-11 season, tentatively set to begin in early October, can be sent via email to razorclams@dfw.wa.gov or by Postal Service to: RazorClams, 48 Devonshire Rd., Montesano, WA 98563.

Comments regarding initial digging opportunities must be received by Sept. 17, although WDFW will consider other suggestions throughout the season. Information about current razor-clam stocks, marine toxins and digging options is available on WDFW’s website at http://bit.ly/aoIfnQ.

WDFW is soliciting public comments by mail and email on this year’s digging options as a lower-cost alternative to conducting a series of public meetings, said Ron Warren, regional WDFW fish manager.

“We welcome public feedback in developing razor-clam seasons, but state budget reductions have made it necessary to change our approach,” Warren said. “We’re hoping this course proves both more economical and more effective in reaching the public.”

During the 2009-10 season, clam diggers harvested more than 3.7 million razor clams on the five ocean beaches open for digging on the Washington coast.
