Citizens are invited to participate in restoration of the Calawah Watershed

Posted by David Haviland on March 3, 2010 at 5:31 am (694 social interactions)

Olympia, WA - The U. S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Region recently designated the Calawah watershed, located on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula, as a focused watershed.  As a result, this emphasis area will receive priority funding for restoration projects.  Olympic National Forest must now develop an action plan that outlines long term restoration goals in cooperation with citizens who have an interest in the watershed.

Employees from the Pacific Ranger District will host an Open House to discuss development of the plan on Tuesday, March 16, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, at the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conference room, located at 435 Tillicum Lane in Forks.  All interested community members are invited to attend.

District Ranger Dean Millett said, “The Calawah is a unique and beautiful watershed, rich in many natural resources, and deserving of the most restorative actions that we can offer.  We strongly encourage all who wish to have a hand in this effort to join us at the Open House and participate in this discussion.  Our goal is to form a collaborative group that represents a wide spectrum of public interests.”  The group will operate autonomously, once established.

For further information about the open house, please contact District Ranger Dean R. Millett at 360-374-1222.  For general information about Olympic National Forest, please visit http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/olympic
