 Aberdeen, WA - A 3-alarm fire has destroyed Stouffer Moore Floore coverings on South I Street in Aberdeen. The fire was reported around 6PM Tuesday night, Fire Chief Dave Carlberg said no one was in the building at the time and that once trucks arrived the response turned quickly to one of containment. Flames broke through the roof of the building within a half hour the second floor began to collapse after 7:30. One engine sits at the base of the building this morning watching for flare-ups.
The Aberdeen Fire Department will be working with the building owner (Jim Moore) and insurance company (Travelers – Dave Johnson agent) in determining the loss totals for the building and contents. The department will also be working with the insurance company to provide perimeter security and determine the buildings stability. There are numerous cracks within the walls that currently present a danger to the public and investigators who need to access the interior.
I Street between Heron and State will remain closed as well as the alleyways between the building. State Street between H & I will also remain closed until building stability can be determined.
  
Aberdeen and Montesano Boom trucks were used to throw water over the top of the building, while multiple engines sprayed water into the windows of the second floor. The Aberdeen Police Department blocked off Heron Street from Broadway to H Street as well as the offramp to State street. Officer also helped control a crowd of nearly 200 that began to gather near the fire that at times rose 3 stories above the building, and was reported visible from the Simpson Avenue Bridge, and the Southside of Aberdeen.

At 18:02 hours on October 28, 2009, Grays Harbor Communications was notified via a passerby of heavy smoke coming from the Stouffer/Moore floor covering business located at 310 S. I St. The Aberdeen Fire Department responded and upon arrival found heavy smoke and fire within the building. A second alarm was immediately called followed shortly thereafter with third alarm. Units from Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Cosmopolis, Montesano, and Grays Harbor Fire District 2 responded. Six engines, 2 ladders, and a number of other support units responded with approximately 45 firefighters. One unit still remains on scene this morning.
A defensive strategy was taken throughout the incident. Due to the extreme heat and smoke conditions that crews were confronted with, no personnel ever entered the interior of the building. The entire roof of the structure failed during the incident and fell in on the 2nd floor and its contents. There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters.

The investigation will continue this morning with AFD investigators getting statements from witnesses and responders. Scene processing will not take place until the buildings structural condition can be assessed and determined safe to enter.
