Suspect in custody after police chase locks down Aberdeen elementary school

In the last week and a half the Aberdeen Police Department has responded to seven reports of cars being stolen while warming up and left unattended.  Many were recovered a short time later.
The most recent case led to a short pursuit by the Washington State Patrol, the suspect fleeing on foot, a neighborhood flooded with police officers from Aberdeen and Hoquiam, and a elementary school going into lockdown.
All of these serious crimes could of been avoided if the drivers of the cars would of stayed with the vehicles while they warmed up.
The Aberdeen Police Department is very concerned with this recent trend and the risk to the safety of all citizens and the significant loss in property it represents.
We ask everyone to not leave their car running unattended.  Ignoring this request not only creates a significant risk of a totally preventable crime from occurring, but it is illegal to do. – APD Captain John Green
