Log truck rolls over near Hoquiam Airport
On August 6, 2013 at about 1447 hours, Hoquiam officers responded to one vehicle rollover accident involving a fully loaded log truck in the 500 block of Airport Way, near the Port of Grays Harbor’s terminal 3 where a ship is being loaded with logs for export.
Upon arrival officers found one lane of the roadway partially blocked, and the female driver, a 35 year old Montesano resident, had already exited the truck and appeared not to have suffered any major injuries. The female driver has been licensed to operate commercial vehicles since September 2012. She reported suffering from minor pain but refused medical attention.
As a result of the subsequent investigation it was determined the red1994 International Tractor Trailer, owned by Straka Trucking of Hoquiam, was traveling eastbound on Airport Way to deliver a load of logs to a ship in port at Terminal 3.
A Washington State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Trooper responded to the scene to perform an inspection of both the tractor trailer and log trailer. The inspection revealed a torsion bar support bracket near one of the rear axles on the back of the trailer appeared to have broken recently. The damage near the bracket caused further stress to the trailer which caused further damage, ultimately resulting in the trailer rolling over.
Employees from nearby Willis Enterprises as well as a truck from Vessey and Son’s responded and assisted with the removal of the logs from the roadway, as well as getting the tractor trailer and trailer upright. The tractor trailer was later removed from the scene JHD Diesel/Grays Harbor Towing.
