Aberdeen repeals aggressive begging ordinance

ABERDEEN, Wash. – The city of Aberdeen last night repealed a section of their aggressive begging ordinance, city attorney Eric Nelson said last night “What happened about a year ago was that the city’s insurance carrier the Washington City’s Insurance Authority, sent out an advisory to all of it’s members that if you had an aggressive begging ordinance you should either repeal it or not enforce it because very similar language had been struck down by the 9th Circuit Court.” Nelson didn’t recall ever using the ordinance to prosecute anyone and said that other ordinances like “disorderly conduct” usually cover situations in which a panhandler is menacing someone.
