City of Westport begins planning for centennial celebration

WESTPORT, Wash. – Westport city staff, and council, met with local business owners last night to start planning the city’s centennial celebration. Mayor Michael Bruce said “This is the community kickoff, and we’re planning for our 100th anniversary which would be June 26th, 2014. So we’ve invited the public to come and give us some ideas on what they’d like to see included.
About 30 attended the meeting last night, Bruce said more meetings are being scheduled for public input and they’re relying heavily on volunteers “We’ve developed some committees, we would like to add some festivals next year. We want to get the historical society involved in this, the school, the Coast Guard…”
Ideas discussed at last night’s meeting ranged from a founder’s day parade, scavenger hunts, a centennial coin button or pin, and maybe even a Mrs. Westport Pageant.
Details and upcoming events will be posted to the city’s website at http://ci.westport.wa.us volunteers are also planning to build a website specifically for the centennial. The city is hoping to increase visitors with events planned throughout 2014, the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee will also be looking for tie-ins to celebrate the city’s 100th year.
