Gregoire Points to Congress, Europe to Save Washington
OLYMPIA, Wash. – About a month before lawmakers return to Olympia for a special legislative session, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire says two key things need to happen in order to save the state’s budget “The way out, for us, is if the debt crisis in Europe could settle down and get themselves on a path forward, and Congress could do it’s job. With the indicators that we’re seeing, we could pull out of this, but if those two things don’t happen we could be heading for yet another recession.”
Gregoire said Washington’s sales tax infrastructure makes us more vulnerable when consumer confidence slumps. In her budget proposal released last Thursday, Gregoire hinted she’d be open to asking for more revenue, noting Olympia has cut about $10 billion in spending in the last three years.
