Washington EBT Cards Buy Salty Wine

ABERDEEN, Wash. – Local Police are seeing a new trend in abuse of Washington’s Basic Food program, cooking wine. Cooking wine is classified as a lower grade wine with salt added to slow the fermentation process after the bottle is opened. Police Chief Bob Torgerson said local retailers are shaking their heads “they’re seeing more cooking wine, and you can apparently go into the store and [if] you’re buying cooking sherry or cooking wine, you can buy that on your card.”
While a supervisor at the DSHS Community Services Office says it is not allowed, it remains unclear whether retailers know that cooking wine is the same as wine. Washington’s EBT card rules state that you cannot purchase beer, wine, or alcohol.
