Kelly Clarkson marks 15th anniversary of "American Idol" win, readies new single this week

Ray Mickshaw/FOXFifteen years ago Monday, a waitress from Burleson, TX became a household name…and the music business changed forever.

On September 4, 2002, Kelly Clarkson won the very first season of American Idol, a show that Fox was so unsure would succeed that they aired it as a summer replacement. But the show, billed as “The Search for a Superstar,” lived up to its name. As her coronation single, “A Moment Like This,” jumped to #1, Kelly became the first of several stars whose careers were launched by the show.

“15 years ago today my life changed y’all! I am so blessed and so grateful,” Kelly tweeted Monday, adding the hashtag #Amomentlikethis.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Kelly is releasing her new single this week — September 7, to be exact. The song, which may or may not be called “So Soft,” is the first release from her upcoming album, her first under her new deal with Atlantic Records.

Meanwhile, ABC’s reboot of American Idol is set to air at some point in 2018.
