Lady Washington & Hawaiian Chieftain Return to Grays Harbor This Month

Posted by David Haviland on September 3, 2010 at 8:58 am

Aberdeen, WA - The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain return to their home ports of Aberdeen and Westport this month after a successful four-month season of visits to ports in Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. While in Grays Harbor, both ships will offer walk-on tours, three-hour public sailings, and K-12 educational programs.

The nearly complete summer season included the successful addition of special value-priced Evening Sails on Hawaiian Chieftain or Lady Washington. The ships’ crews proposed the Evening Sails early in the season as a way to increase revenue for the Seaport and offer crew members more sea time. The Historical Seaport introduced the products in July. Both vessels conducted 19 Evening Sails, mostly on Wednesdays and Fridays. (One is scheduled for this evening in Port Angeles. Three are scheduled for next week.) Of all 20 sails through tonight, four were sold out (including tonight’s in Port Angeles), and in eight cases, a second boat was added due to high ticket demand. The Historical Seaport is pleased with the performance of this new product, and the organization is considering the addition of more Evening Sails next summer.

Ecology Seeking Public Comment on Updates to State Shoreline Rules

Posted by David Haviland on September 3, 2010 at 5:58 am

Olympia, WA - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is seeking public comment on a proposal to change five state Shoreline Management Act rules - including new guidance designed to address controversy surrounding commercial geoduck aquaculture in the intertidal, or shallower, areas of Puget Sound.

"The proposed geoduck aquaculture rule simply makes permit processes consistent across all jurisdictions - hopefully creating a fair and equitable playing field for our state's vital shellfish industry and shoreline residents," said Gordon White, Program Manager for Ecology's Shorelands and Environmental Assistance Program.

White said the new draft geoduck aquaculture rule is based on a 2007 legislative mandate directing Ecology to provide guidance to local governments on addressing commercial geoduck aquaculture in their shoreline master programs.

WDFW Accepting Comments on 2011-12 Sportfishing Rule Proposals

Posted by David Haviland on September 3, 2010 at 5:52 am

Olympia, WA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is accepting public comments through Oct. 2 on state sportfishing rules proposed for 2011-12.

The 17 rule proposals, which would affect various recreational fisheries around the state, are available on WDFW’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/rule_proposals/. Printed copies of the proposals are available by contacting WDFW’s Fish Program at (360) 902-2700.

As a cost-saving measure, WDFW last year changed the process for considering sportfishing rule proposals to a two-year cycle, rather than a yearly basis. The next opportunity to propose major changes to sportfishing rules will be next year for the 2012-14 season, said Craig Burley, fish management division manager for WDFW.
