Shelton Woman Dies in Single Vehicle Accident Tuesday

Posted by David Haviland on September 1, 2010 at 9:00 am

Shelton, WA - A 72 year old Shelton woman was killed at about 3:30 PM yesterday in a single vehicle collision in the 5600 Block of East Agate Road.  According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Traffic Enforcement Team investigator, a 1995 Jeep Cherokee driven by Emelie W. Link was eastbound on the Agate Road when its wheels left the roadway to the right.  The vehicle collided with a culvert on the south side of the roadway then struck a utility pole coming to rest on its roof.  Link was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was partially ejected.  Investigators do not think speed or alcohol were causing factors in this incident.  Link was not wearing a seatbelt.

State Furlough Day Number 3 September 7th

Posted by David Haviland on September 1, 2010 at 5:33 am

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) offices will close Tuesday, Sept. 7, for the third of 10 statewide, unpaid employee-layoff days.

During the closure, WDFW wildlife areas and water-access sites will remain open for public use, but WDFW hatcheries will not be open to the public. Fishing and hunting licenses may be purchased online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ and at retail vendors.

The statewide, temporary layoffs are mandated by ESSB 6503 (http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=6503), adopted by the 2010 Legislature to help balance the state budget in the face of a revenue shortfall.

WDFW enforcement officers are exempt from the temporary layoffs under the law. WDFW also has exempted fish counters who distinguish various species of salmon as they move past Columbia River hydropower dams.

WSDOT Begins Fieldwork on Pontoon Project at Port of Tacoma

Posted by David Haviland on August 31, 2010 at 10:00 am

SEATTLE – Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews have started preliminary fieldwork to determine whether the Port of Tacoma would be a feasible site to build pontoons and anchors for a new, safer State Route 520 floating bridge that will open to drivers in 2014.

WSDOT needs 77 total pontoons in various sizes for the new six-lane floating bridge. Crews are scheduled to begin construction on the initial 33 pontoons at a casting basin in Grays Harbor in spring 2011. This fieldwork study will help to determine if the Port of Tacoma site could be used to build some of the remaining 44 pontoons. WSDOT has also identified the Concrete Technology Corporation site in Tacoma, in addition to the Grays Harbor site, as potential pontoon construction locations.

Fieldwork at the Port of Tacoma is planned Monday through Friday for up to 20 working days. Crews will drill four borings measuring up to 150 feet deep, including two groundwater observation wells, and conduct other soil tests.
