HOQUIAM, Wash. - The city of Hoquiam accepted the Hoquiam Train Depot onto the Registry of Historic Places. City Councilman Byran Hyde said now they just need one thing, their caboose.

Mayor Jack Durney said to his knowledge the caboose is being painted, he then thanked all those involved for helping to make the train depot a reality. "I would remind people to go over Tuesday through Saturday, and go take a look at our train station, it is a remarkable restoration, it's the conclusion of a 20 year process, with many volunteers, it's a great addition"

The train depot was donated to the city of Hoquiam by Burlington Railroad in 1992, the 1.2 million dollar restoration project was funded mostly through grants from the Federal Highway Department.

National Teen Driver Safety Week Celebrated in Washington State

Posted by David Haviland on October 12, 2009 at 10:00 am (1293 social interactions)

Grays Harbor County - Between October 18 and 24, Washington State will celebrate National Teen Driver Safety Week focusing not only on the laws governing new drivers in Washington, but on the impacts parents have on teens by setting limits and modeling responsible driving behavior. Research shows that parents are the single most important influence on their teen’s driving.

As an advocate of young drivers developing safe, smart driving behaviors, State Farm® provided a grant to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission to reach and teach parents with humorous and interesting video vignettes. As well, the grant funds a new website specifically for Washington parents—a clearinghouse of useful information they can use as their teen begins
their adventure in the driving world -www.washingtonteendrivingweek.com. The website will go live on October 15.

“As the leading insurer of automobiles nationally and in Washington State, we are compelled to also be a leader in reducing the number of crash-related injuries and deaths involving young and novice drivers. We work with and support partners like the Washington Traffic Safety Commission because they share our determination for changing risky behaviors and keeping us all safer behind the wheel,” said Nancy Carpenter, State Farm Public Affairs Specialist.

Health Board to hold hearing on sewage tank design rules, reconsider eye treatment for newborns

Posted by David Haviland on October 12, 2009 at 9:49 am (585 social interactions)

At its October 14 meeting, the state Board of Health will hold a public hearing on a new rule that would govern sewage tank design and construction.

It will also reconsider rule language concerning preventive eye treatment for newborns. This reconsideration is prompted by a national shortage of Erythromycin eye ointment. Proposed amendments would allow health care providers to use other treatments recommended by the CDC. Public testimony will be taken.

The board will also discuss several other rules: water recreation facilities; HIV counseling, testing, and partner services; school immunizations; and birth certificate information requests. It will also decide whether to adopt a proposed strategic plan for the 2009-11 biennium.
