Public-comment deadlines extended on proposed 2010-12 fishing rules

Olympia, WA - The public will have more time to review changes in state sportfishing rules proposed for 2010-12 under an extended comment period announced today by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).


Under the new timeline, WDFW will accept written comments through Dec. 1 on more than 100 proposed regulations - nearly a month longer than previously announced.


In addition, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission has postponed a public hearing on the proposals until its Dec. 4-5 meeting in Olympia.  Written testimony can also be submitted during that meeting.


The commission, which sets policy for WDFW, is scheduled to take action on the proposed rule changes in February of 2010.

Hoquiam Burglary Targets Leather Jackets

Hoquiam, WA - At about 5:00 am on Thursday, September 24, 2009, a man was walking on the sidewalk near the business of Chris’ Motorcycle Parts in the 500 block of Simpson Avenue when he saw that the window in the door at the main entrance to the building was broken out. The witness walked to the Hoquiam police facility to report the incident.


When officers arrived at the scene they searched the interior of the building but did not find anyone inside. When the owner of the business was summoned to the scene he discovered that the only items that were missing were about 10, heavy leather coats. The coats had been stored on a rack a short distance from the entrance to the building. At the time of the investigation it appeared that nothing else in the store had been moved or touched.


The leather coats are valued at between $99 and $150. Several of the brand names of the jackets are Leather Gallery, Wild Rider and MAS.


At the time of this release no suspects have been identified.


Hoquiam police ask that anyone who may have any information regarding the burglary or the coats call the police department at 532-0892.


Albany Woman Run Over by Truck On Chehalis River Gravel Bar

Oakville, WA - A 22 year old woman died this morning when she fell out of a truck bed and was run over by the truck. The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Department was called to a Gravel Bar on the Chehalis River off of Matson Road in Oakville just after 2 o'clock.

The 22 year old Albany, Oregon woman was determined deceased at the scene, a 32 year old Oakville resident was taken into custody for vehicular homicide, the Sheriff's department reports the incident appears to be alcohol related, blood was drawn from the Oakville man, and will be tested for alcohol. Deputies are still interviewing witnesses and examining the scene.

Hoquiam Fire Displaces Family of Four

Hoquiam, WA - The American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter dispatched aid to the scene of a devastating house fire in Hoquiam today. The early morning blaze forced a family of four to flee from their home located on the 400 block of Cleveland Street in Hoquiam. The Red Cross is helping the family with their immediate needs such as shelter, groceries, clothing, toiletries, and medication replacement.


A two-alarm Fire in Hoquiam this morning just after 3am damage a home, and left the attached garage a total loss. Headquarters Captain David Joy tells us the fire in the 400 block of Cleveland appeared to have started in the garage, then expanding to the home. Responders were able to clear the fire just after 6 this morning, the family in the home got out without injury, the cause of the fire, as well as estimated damages, remain under investigation.

West Nile Virus Detected in Aberdeen

Aberdeen, WA - The Grays Harbor County Health Department announced the first detection of the  West Nile Virus in a bird in Grays Harbor County has been detected in a dead crow, found in Aberdeen.


Dr. John Bausher, the County's Health Officer said "West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes, birds, and horses all over Washington State, we have a good surveillance system in place and it worked exactly as it was supposed to."


So far there have been no confirmed cases of the virus in humans in Grays Harbor County, the risk of West Nile Virus in humans is low but residents are encouraged to take precautions such as removing basins for standing water on property, avoiding outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and using repellants that contain DEET, as well as securing screen doors and windows to ensure they are working properly.
