Posted by David Haviland on November 12, 2009 at 10:10 am (769 social interactions)

OCEAN SHORES, Wash. - The City of Ocean Shores has made a move to combine the efforts of the Police and Fire departments. Mayor Dean Bunkers said they have placed Fire Chief Jim Hodges on administrative leave - with pay, while they seek to eliminate his position.

Bunkers tells us "This is just what I feel is a prudent financial decision for me to consolidate two positions down into one which will save us a good chunk of money"

A Press Release from the City stated that Bunkers will be asking the city council to reorganize the Fire Chief and Chief of Police Duties into a single position, Bunkers said the city is facing a huge deficit "The failure of the EMS Levy has increased our deficit out there by $687,000."

The recommendation made by the mayor seeks to eliminate the Fire Chief position by December 31st.

ABERDEEN, Wash. - A signed purchase and sale agreement between Weyerhauser and Willis Enterprises should close the deal by the end of this week, many may not have noticed but the mill has already opened.

Weyerhauser Spokesman Anthony Chavez says there are a few loose ends to tie up "The deal's been signed, it's just a matter of some formalities that have to occur before the deal can officially close. We expect that to happen later this week."

Paul Willis of Willis Enterprises that they have hired most of the employees they need to get started already "We're ready to roll over there, we've leased some area from Weyerhauser a little while ago and have been doing things over there anyhow" Willis said they plan to start small "We're gonna start somewhere between 30 and 50 and work our way up from there"

At it's peak the facility in Aberdeen employed 150. The Plywood mill was closed by Weyerhauser in January of this year citing weak market condition.

Hoquiam Farmers Market News With The BEST Autumn Soup Recipe

Posted on November 12, 2009 at 5:49 am (970 social interactions)

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and your Farmers Market wants to help make this the easiest least stressful holiday dinner ever.  I still shudder when I think about my worst Thanksgiving.  I had a houseful of week-long guests and the septic tank failed.  Then the refrigerator gave an odd gurgle and died.  It was pouring rain.  The company wouldn’t leave, and I wanted to go to a motel with a flushing toilet.

Let’s not let this scenario happen to you.  Think happy thoughts and make your list.

I decided this week to concentrate on a very important part of the meal; the wine.  Donning my storm gear, I made a trip to Westport Winery, ready to be educated about the best wine suitable for serving with turkey.  Kim didn’t hesitate when I explained my mission.  She whipped out a bottle of their Bog Berry Blush, a blend of Cranberry & Gewurztraminer.  I didn’t want to insult her by refusing to sample this nectar, so I did.  Ambrosia.  She had to hide the bottle, I was driving after all.  Serve this to your guests and it won’t matter if the turkey gets burnt or the pumpkin pie is rubbery.  They’ll just beam at you and thank you for the wonderful meal.

However, you can take the worry out of your meal by stopping by the market.  Nancy has her order list ready, and you can request pies, pumpkin logs, rolls, bread, cookies- all the dessert goodies will be baked for you!  Just take the wrapping off, slice & serve, accept the compliments and they’ll never know that you didn’t slave away in the kitchen.  We won’t tell- secrets are safe with us.

Bear Sightings Increase in Grays Harbor

Posted by David Haviland on November 11, 2009 at 5:30 am (1073 social interactions)

HOQUIAM, Wash. - For several weeks the residents who live on Tennis Court in the northern part of Hoquiam have reported seeing a black bear in their neighborhood. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife set up a trap in the area of Tennis Court but the bear has so far avoided the trap.

On Monday evening (11/09/09) at 4:50 pm Hoquiam police received calls regarding the sighting of a black bear in the area of Washington Court which is located west of Lincoln Street and above Grand Avenue. Another sighting of the bear was reported at 6:42 pm on Orchard Drive which is located several blocks south of Washington Court.

At 1:30 am on Tuesday morning Sgt. Shane Krohn photographed a black bear sitting in an apple tree in the yard of a residence in the 600 block of Orchard Drive. Krohn watched the bear for about 15 minutes as it devoured the treats attached to the limbs of the tree. The fact that Krohn was there did not seem to bother the bear at all.
