Credit: Myrna SuarezEven people who’ve never stepped foot in New York State — or the U.S. — probably know that Billy Joel is from Long Island, New York. Maybe that’s why the residents of that area have just crowned him the winner of the “That’s SO Long Island” contest.
Local paper Newsday has been running the contest for several weeks, asking readers to vote on who or what best exemplifies the area, which is essentially a suburb of New York City. Thanks to over 520,000 reader votes, Billy beat out 63 other local celebrities, attractions and activities to be declared the most “Long Island” of them all. Among the fellow Long Island celebrities he beat: Billy Crystal, Lindsay Lohan, Jerry Seinfeld, Alec Baldwin, Idina Menzel, Debbie Gibson, Natalie Portman, Rosie O’Donnell, Ralph Macchio and Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider.
