Susan Boyle Covers Pink Floyd, John Lennon on New Album, “Hope”

By Andrea Dresdale

SYCO/Columbia RecordsBritain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle returns this holiday season with a new disc called Hope, and it finds the Scottish singer covering songs by some unlikely artists: Pink Floyd and John Lennon.

The album, due October 21, features Susan performing “Wish You Were Here,” the title track of Pink Floyd’s 1975 album, as well as “Imagine,” the classic title track of Lennon’s 1971 album. In addition, the album includes renditions of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel” — which Susan calls “one of my all-time favorites” — plus “You Raise Me Up,” made famous by Josh Groban, and the 1967 hit “Oh Happy Day” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

“I have really enjoyed making this album,” says Susan in a statement. “I had a huge input in music suggestions and finally have been able to record…’Angel’… I also am pleased to be able to sing some uptempo songs that show variation in my repertoire.” She acknowledges that it’s a “risk” to sing something like “Imagine, and adds, “Of course the die-hard Lennon fans will probably criticize but I hope that people like my …read more

Not Everyone is a U2 Fan, Apple Discovers

By Music News Group

Image Courtesy UMusicTurns out not everyone is a U2 fan. After the band announced during an Apple’s press conference last week that it was giving a download of its new album Songs of Innocence to everyone with iTunes, and that the new album would automatically appear in all iTunes user’s music libraries, there was much rejoicing among fans of the band. But there were some iTunes users who weren’t thrilled; so many, in fact, that Apple has come up with an opt-out page for those non-U2-loving folks. With one click on the page, users can remove Songs of Innocence from their libraries.

Bono and company can soothe the wound to its collective ego with good old-fashioned capital gains; Rolling Stone reports that the band has enjoyed a dramatic spike in back catalog sales since the dramatic free release of Songs of Innocence — with 24 songs in iTunes’ top 200 and five albums in the top 50.

Robin Thicke Admits Drug Abuse, Says He Didn’t Co-Write “Blurred Lines”

By Music News Group

Image courtesy ABC/Kelsey McNealRemember last year, when Robin Thicke and Marvin Gaye‘s family got involved in a legal dispute over whether or not Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” borrows from Gaye’s hit song, “Got to Give It Up?” Both Thicke and co-writer Pharrell Williams gave testimony about it during depositions in Los Angeles federal court — testimony in which Thicke not only reveals he didn’t really co-write the song, but also admits to drug abuse.

According to the deposition, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Thicke admitted he wasn’t truthful when he claimed during various interviews that he and Pharrell co-write “Blurred Lines,” including an interview with GQ magazine in which he claimed he and Pharrell “literally wrote the song in about a half hour and recorded it. The whole thing was done in a couple hours — normally, those are the best ones. Him and I would go back and forth where I’d sing a line and he’d be like, ‘Hey, hey, hey!'”

The truth, according to Thicke’s deposition, is that he was drunk and high while Pharrell wrote “Blurred Lines.” “To be honest, that’s …read more

Stevie Nicks Says the Team Adam “Voice” Contestants She Mentored Are Like Her “Children”

By Andrea Dresdale

Trae Patton/NBCThe new season of The Voice hasn’t even started yet, but all the scenes featuring the mentors working with each coach’s team have already been recorded. Stevie Nicks, whom you’ll see working with Adam Levine‘s team this season, says she became so attached to the contestants, she feels like their mom.

“I feel very invested in these kids,” Stevie says in the current issue of OUT magazine. “I feel like I have sent 12 children into the world…they are so nervous that you are nervous for them.”

Asked about the advice she gave the contestants, Stevie reveals, “The best thing I actually said to all of them was, ‘No matter what happens after this, just this day, never forget about it. It’s a dream come true. Take everything that happens today and tomorrow with you for the rest of your life and just totally dig on it, and tell everybody the story…because these kinds of times never come again.’”

As for whether or not she and Lindsey Buckingham would have auditioned for The Voice had been around in their pre-Fleetwood Mac days, when they were a struggling duo, Stevie laughs, “I would have …read more

Mariah Carey’s Friends Fear a Breakdown, Claims Report

By Music News Group

Image Courtesy ABC/Donna SvennevikMariah Carey has had a rough summer. Following her commercially disappointing album and divorce rumors regarding her six-year marriage to Nick Cannon, friends of the diva reportedly are concerned Mariah may experience another meltdown.

“She has a history of mental health issues,” an unnamed source tells Life & Style, referring to Mariah’s hospital stay for psychiatric care back in 2001.

Apparently, Mariah’s estranged husband wanted to end the marriage months ago but feared how Mariah would cope.

“Nick’s No. 1 goal is to get the kids into a healthy environment where they would have some sense of normalcy,” an insider adds.

Earlier this month, Cannon confirmed on Twitter that there were false reports circulating about their marriage. “For the record I NEVER have, nor will I make a statement regarding my marriage,” he tweeted before later adding, “While I would like to remain silent, I can no longer allow this to happen. I love @MariahCarey and that will never change!!!” The posts have since been deleted.

Taylor Swift Invites Frat Boys Who Danced to “Shake It Off” to Her Tour Next Year

By Andrea Dresdale

ABC/ Lorenzo BevilaquaTaylor Swift really appreciates her fans. Exhibit A: she’s just invited a whole fraternity’s worth of guys to her tour next year, thanks to an adorable lip-dub video they made to her hit “Shake It Off.”

The clip was made by the brothers of Delta Sigma Phi Beta Mu at Kentucky’s Transylvania University. In the clip, all the boys, some dressed in wacky outfits, dance in and out of their dorm rooms and down the hall, lip-synching to “Shake It Off” in one take. The whole thing was a stunt to drive people to their fundraising page for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk fund.

Taylor was so impressed that she tweeted a link to the video and wrote, “I’m personally inviting all of these guys (and a date!) to a show on tour next year, it’s on me. Nailed it, bros!”

One brother responded by posting a screenshot of Taylor’s tweet, and adding, “This is quite simply the best day of my life.” Another tweeted to Taylor, “we accept,” while yet another <a target="_self" href="https://twitter.com/MichaelSoder21/status/510524656517124096" …read more

“Voice” Coaches Defend Their Show: “I Never Had a Gwen Stefani…to Tell Me Anything When I Was 15 Years Old”

By Andrea Dresdale

Smallz & Raskind exclusively for BillboardSince it began, the big criticism about The Voice has been that it hasn’t created any music stars: it’s simply made the show’s coaches — from Adam Levine to Shakira to Blake Shelton to Christina Aguilera — even more rich and famous than they were before. But now, the coaches say that even if the contestants don’t become stars, they’re still receiving something very valuable from their time on the show: advice.

Adam, who said in 2012 that The Voice has to produce a star in order to “continue to be taken seriously,” is now singing a different tune. He tells Billboard that the show is really more about helping prospective singers to be “as well-equipped as possible for reality, which starts the minute that confetti falls and people continue with their careers.”

The new coach, Pharrell Williams, agrees, telling Billboard,I just don’t like that we’re talking about this from the defense, as if there’s something wrong [with the show]. I never had a Gwen Stefani, or an Adam Levine, or a Blake Shelton to come in and tell me anything when I was 15 years old.”
