Who's the Ultimate Pop Star? The Answer May Surprise You

By Andrea Dresdale

ABC NewsWho would you say is the ultimate pop star? Well, Time magazine has crunched the numbers based on the Billboard top 10 and determined that it’s….Mariah Carey.

Time looked at every song that made the top 10 since 1960, awarding points based on the number of hits each artist scored and how long the artists’ careers have lasted, and created what it calls the “The Ultimate Ranking of Pop Stardom.” The artist with the most points — based on career length and string of hits — was Mariah. She received 1,901 points in total, over a hundred more than the runner-up, Rihanna.

Usher came in third place, followed by The Beatles, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. Katy Perry and Boyz II Men round out the top 10.

Visit Time.com/music-ranking to see where your favorite artist — from Elvis Presley to Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift — comes in on Time’s chart.

Paramore's "Ain't It Fun" Is the Perfect Song for Kids About to Tackle "The Real World"

By Andrea Dresdale

ABC/Lou RoccoIt’s the time of the year when recent high-school graduates head off to college for the first time, and according to Paramore front woman Hayley Williams, the band’s latest hit “Ain’t It Fun” should be on their required listening list.

The song by the Nashville-based rock/pop group is about getting a big dose of reality and suddenly having to make your own way –as the lyrics say, “So what are you gonna do when the world don’t orbit around you?/Ain’t it fun/living in the real world?” Hayley wrote it about being on her own for the first time when she moved to L.A. to record the band’s latest album, but its sentiment is something new college freshmen can definitely relate to.

“I feel like the message is sarcastic but also inspiring enough for younger people who might be getting into the world for the first time on their own,” Hayley explains. “I know it really helped me through a transitional phase in my life, so maybe it’s also connecting with younger people in that way too.”

The song has been connecting with a lot of people in a big way, in …read more

Taylor Swift: "Selling Millions of Records Doesn't Make Me Feel Cool"

By Andrea Dresdale

ABC/ Lorenzo Bevilaqua Taylor Swift‘s new #1 hit “Shake It Off” is an invitation to do your own thing and not worry about fitting in or looking cool. Easier said then done, right? Well, as Taylor explains in a newly released outtake from the song’s video, even she doesn’t feel cool, and she’s a massive superstar.

“A lot of people who I think will relate to the song are people who are dealing with not ever really feeling cool with themselves because other people make them feel like they don’t fit in,” Taylor says. “When, one thing I’ve learned in this whole process is, you can get everything you want in life without ever feeling like you fit in.”

“Like, selling millions of records doesn’t make me feel cool,” she insists. “It makes me feel proud, and like I have a lot of people on my side and I worked really hard, but I don’t think it’s the most important thing in life to fit in.”

OK, Taylor, so what is the most important thing in life?

“To dance to the beat of your own drum,” she says. “And to …read more

Bruno Mars & Beyonce In, Lady Gaga & U2 Out in Poll of America's Top-10 Favorite Musicians

By Andrea Dresdale

John Paul Filo/CBSWhen it comes to music, Americans apparently prefer an English accent. A new unscientific Harris poll reveals The Beatles are America’s favorite musician or band.

The online poll of over 2300 Americans found that the Fab Four are #1 on the list, followed by the late King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Beyonce, who wasn’t even on the list the last time the poll was conducted back in 2010, places third this time around. Legendary rockers Led Zeppelin are also new to the list, debuting at #4, while country icon George Strait is #5.

Yet another newcomer to the list: Bruno Mars, who debuts at #6. Rounding out the top 10 are four artists who all tied for the #7 spot: Neil Diamond, The Eagles, Garth Brooks, and Celine Dion. Only Celine was on the list in 2010.

Whose fortunes have fallen? Artist who were in the top 10 in 2010 but failed to make the list this year include Lady Gaga, U2, the late Frank Sinatra, and country stars Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, and Alan Jackson.

Breaking down the poll demographically, we find more men cited The Beatles as their …read more

Colbie Caillat Unveils Track List for "Gypsy Heart"

By Andrea Dresdale

Republic RecordsColbie Caillat has revealed the full track list for her new album Gypsy Heart, but it’s a bit anticlimactic, since we already knew about five of the 12 songs.

The list shows that the first five tracks on the album are the songs included on her EP Gypsy Heart — Side A, which she released in early June. In addition to her current single “Try,” there’s “Live It Up,” “Blaze,” “If You Love Me Let Me Go” and “Never Gonna Let You Down.”

The rest of the album’s songs are as follows:

“Land Called Far Away”
“Nice Guys”
“Floodgates”
“Just Like That”
“Break Free”
“Never Getting Over You”
“Bigger Love”

As previously reported, Gypsy Heart is the album that Colbie made with after her record company rejected the first batch of songs she wrote for not being “poppy” and commercial enough — an experience that partially inspired the song “Try.” She then went back into the studio with a variety of collaborators, including Babyface, and came up with a whole new selection of songs.

Gypsy Heart will be out September 30.

Did Mariah's Poor Album Sales Contribute to Split with Nick?

By Andrea Dresdale

Def Jam RecordingsMariah Carey’s husband Nick Cannon recently confirmed that the two are living apart, and now a source tells People magazine that their six-year marriage “has been bad for a while.” One big issue, it’s claimed, is the poor performance of Mariah’s recent album.

“When things don’t go well career-wise, sometimes you turn on your other half,” the source tells People, referring to the disappointing sales of Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse.

The source also notes that while Mariah “can be very down-to-earth and hilarious, she can also be high-maintenance.”

According to People, Mariah is staying with the couple’s three-year-old twins in their New York apartment, while Nick has been “living in hotels.” A second source tells the magazine that their split “could get contentious” because “there is a lot to fight over.”

Taylor Swift Scores Biggest Sales Week of the Year with "Shake It Off"; Debuts at #1 on "Billboard" Hot 100

By Andrea Dresdale

Big Machine RecordsTaylor Swift‘s “Shake It Off” has shaken up the Billboard Digital Songs chart with a massive debut.

The song, the first single from Taylor’s upcoming album, 1989, has not only debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it tops the digital songs chart with first-week sales of 544,000 downloads, according to Nielsen Soundscan. That’s the biggest sales week for any song this year, and the fourth-biggest debut sales week in history.

The only songs that started with more downloads in their first weeks are Flo Rida‘sRight Round,” with 636,000; Katy Perry‘s “Roar,” with 557,000; and Taylor’s own “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” with 623,000 copies. That song became Taylor’s first #1 on the Hot 100; “Shake It Off” is now her second.

What’s more, “Shake It Off” is only the 22nd song in history to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. Considering that in the chart’s 56-year history, there have been 1,038 number-ones total, that’s pretty notable.

“Shake It Off” is Taylor’s 60th song to chart on the Hot 100. Only one female artist has racked up more: …read more

By Andrea Dresdale

Danny Clinch for ELLEThis fall, Fleetwood Mac will launch their first tour in nearly twenty years with Christine McVie, the voice behind such classics as “Don’t Stop,” “You Make Lovin’ Fun” and “Over My Head.” The 71-year-old rock legend says she’s been working out with a personal trainer so she’ll be able to spend long hours onstage without collapsing.

Speaking to ELLE magazine, Christine says, referring to her keyboard playing style, “The aim is to be fit enough to stand up for two and a half hours balancing on one foot, which is what I do.”

This new tour will be a little bit more luxurious that in the old days, though, as Christine explains. Not only will they be traveling by private jet, she says, but “I’m going to have someone that packs for me.” And during the downtime on the road, she says, “I want to go out and do things…not just stick around having room service for two days. I feel like I know where I’m going now, and I want to enjoy this.”

American Authors Want Ryan Tedder's Songs, Not His Steaks

By Andrea Dresdale

Andrew Zaeh/Island Def JamAmerican Authors spent the summer opening for OneRepublic and The Script on tour. The band says while they would’ve loved to have had OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder write them a hit song, they had to content themselves with him offering them hunks of meat.

Speaking to Fuse, Authors singer Zac Barnett says, “There’d be so many nights on the tour where we’d all be out kickin’ it, behind the venue, and he’s always barbecuing, grilling up steaks. It’s cool, y’know, ’cause he’s a good cook. He’s really good at grilling up steaks and burgers and brats and whatnot.”

Sounds great, right? But as Zac explains, there was a downside. “There would be multiple times where I just had dinner a couple hours before,” Zac explains. “And then when Ryan Tedder hits you up and he’s like, ‘Yo, dude, I just cooked you up this ribeye steak! Here, have it! And you’re like, ‘Well, I just had dinner…’ [And he's like] ‘No, dude you should totally try this!’ You can’t really tell Ryan Tedder, ‘No, dude I don’t want your ribeye!’”

Zac laughs, “Four ribeye steaks and …read more
