Aberdeen Police stopped a suicidal woman from jumping off of the Chehalis River Bridge earlier this week. Lieutenant C.J. Chastain said that officers were called to the bridge around 8:25 pm Wednesday, September 6th. A passing motorist reported a female straddling the railing of the bridge at midspan, which is about 70 feet above the water.
Sgt. Ross Lampky responded to the call and began speaking with the 31-year-old Hoquiam woman. Chastain said that when she saw the officer arrive she placed both legs over the railing toward the river.
Sgt. Lampky was familiar with the young woman, he was able to establish a rapport and stand nearby to speak. When the woman asked to smoke a cigarette, Sgt. Lampky directed her attention to a nearby officer. Once her attention was diverted, he grabbed and pulled her backward over the railing onto the sidewalk.
The woman was transported to the Grays Harbor Community Hospital to speak with a mental health care provider.
