Aberdeen Police Administrators Union Supports Transportation Benefit District

ABERDEEN, Wash. – Members of the Aberdeen Police Administrators Union (APAU) are encouraging the residents of Aberdeen to support the passage of the Transportation Benefit District in the February special election, the deadline for which is today.

We support the TBD as it will provide needed repairs and improvements to the streets of Aberdeen. The sources of revenue for these repairs are a 0.0013 increase to the sales tax rate, which is an additional 13 cents on a one hundred dollar purchase. It is our understanding that about half of all sales tax revenue that goes to the City of Aberdeen comes from people who visit from outside of the area. We believe that it is a great idea to collect a projected $300,000 in additional revenue from people who visit Aberdeen. The people visit, use the streets and services, and their sales tax money would fix our streets.

With the proposed increase in sales tax going from 8.4% to 8.53% it would not put local businesses in Aberdeen at a competitive disadvantage with businesses in other areas of the county or state.

As career officers of the Aberdeen Police Department we also see the potential for a secondary benefit of the TBD to public safety. The police department provides service to all citizens and guests of Aberdeen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The budget for this 24 hour service comes from the City of Aberdeen General Fund. If the Transportation Benefit District passes it should reduce the strain on the City of Aberdeen’s General Fund with the hope of additional funds being available for public safety.

Members of the APAU hold the rank of Lieutenant or Captain, and are members of the Aberdeen Police Department. We have members who live within the city limits of Aberdeen, and those who do not; but ALL members pay local sales tax to the City of Aberdeen.
