Aberdeen Super Selects A.J. West Principal

ABERDEEN, Wash. – School Superintendent Tom Opstad said tonight that he will recommend the hiring of John Meers as the new A.J. West Elementary School principal at the School Board’s next meeting on April 10.

Mr. Meers, who has relatives on Grays Harbor, is currently a sixth-grade teacher in the Bethel School District. He has held several leadership roles in his building including site council chairman, advisory council technology representative, and seven years as the principal designee. Mr. Meers has served as a substitute principal in numerous buildings in the Bethel School District over the past two years. He completed his master of arts in education and principal certification at Pacific Lutheran University.

Dr. Opstad said input from the staff at A.J. West was instrumental in helping him make the final decision.

We had an outstanding field of applicants and I am very confident that John Meers will lead a smooth transition in taking over for longtime principal, Bill O’Donnell, and, I am very grateful to Margaret Carthum for stepping in as interim principal, which allowed us to conduct a solid process in selecting our next A.J. West principal. – Tom Opstad
