SHELTON, Wash. – A six year old Elma boy is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies and Paramedics from Mason County Fire Protection District #13 responded to a residence on the 2200 block of West Star Lake Drive in the southwest corner of Mason County at about 11:30 AM today. They found the boy had sustained life threatening injuries.
Investigators are continuing the investigation of the incident. The preliminary investigation indicates boy gained access to the key for a gun safe then opened it. While playing with the gun it discharged hitting the boy in the head.
The boys mother and toddler sister were asleep in the living room of the house at the time of the incident. The victim’s eight year old brother was nearby when the gun discharged.
At the time this release was written, Harborview listed the boy’s condition as extremely critical
